Ray Raposa might be the perfect singer around to cover Hank Williams, at least in a way. Few capture a lonesome sound on record as well as he does, although he might not have the sunny country shuffle Williams had to temper his heartworn tales. Still, Raposa's version of "Weary Blues From Waiting" is pretty solid. It's pretty straightforward, with nothing but threadbare guitar behind his cracked warble. But he also goes after that high whistling note Williams always hit so beautifully and manages it pretty well.
It turns out this is part of a bunch of Hank covers Castanets covered at Young God Records head Michael Gira's suggestion, and Raposa will be giving them away digitally during the month of September.
The covers work as a smart build-up to the band's new album of original material, called Texas Rose, The Thaw, and The Beasts, out Sept. 22 on Asthmatic Kitty [MOKB]
Beautiful stuff. Can't wait to hear some more.
Yeah, yesterday I though, "Hey, this is pretty good." But today I'm thinking, "Hey, I've listened to this six times."
