Califone’s album of last year, All My Friends Are Funeral Singers, was a quiet classic that deserved greater exposure than it ultimately received. The combination of Tim Rutili’s gravel-y vocals and the stripped down musical direction the band has been plowing for many years are represented beautifully here, on this video for “Giving Away the Bride” from that record.
It’s unlikely that Rutili and his group are expecting a big breakthrough at this point in their careers, some 12 years in and with multiple albums under their belts. But “Giving Away the Bride” demonstrates why they deserve greater exposure, with its clattering percussion and sparse atmosphere reminiscent of Talk Talk’s Laughing Stock, and Rutili’s forlorn vocals providing the perfect counterpart to their musical yearning.
