Here’s a sight you don’t often see on late night TV—a band showing up without a new album to promote. Calexico appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s show last night (May 5) without a proper album release to their name since the 2008 record Carried to Dust, causing the host to brandish a copy of it saying it’s their “latest album.” Still, any chance to see Joey Burns and John Convertino perform with the mariachi outfit Luz de Luna is always welcome, and these versions of “Crystal Frontier” and “Ojitos Traidores” demonstrate how vibrant this band can be in a live setting. Let’s hope it’s not too long before that follow-up to Carried to Dust surfaces.
