It’s taken seven years for Cake to put together the Showroom of Compassion album, and it seems the band has overhauled its sound during that hiatus from the biz. There are still familiar Cake-like elements at play here—the adherence to quirky shifts through the familiar pop-rock formula, layered vocal melodies, and a memorable sing-along chorus—but the album as a whole is said by singer John McCrea to be markedly different from their older efforts. And hey, that interview claims they used a solar powered studio to record it in, so kudos to them for that.
