Cake’s Showroom of Compassion is likely to be best remembered for reaching the Billboard 200 number one slot by selling just 44,000 copies—an all-time low since Nielsen SoundScan was used to track sales. But it’s unlikely the band members care too much about that—hey, a number 1 album is a number 1 album, right?—and they turned up on Lopez Tonight yesterday (March 3) to perform this version of “Mustache Man (Wasted)” from the record. This is the kind of quirky ‘90s-esque rock that Cake has been pedaling since surfacing over 15 years ago, with odd stabs of brass and percussion instruments. It’s essentially the sound of a band knowing what they’re good at and rigidly sticking to it.
