It might seem crazy that the guys in Cake are celebrating two full decades in the business this year, but the Sacramento alt. rockers have proven to have surprising staying power. The new Showroom of Compassion even topped the Billboard 200 briefly on its release in January, although that’s largely due to falling album sales and the deathly quiet market at the beginning of the year. Last night (June 30) the band graced The Late Show with this version of “Long Time” from that new record, and it pretty much does everything you’d expect a Cake song to do, including quirky deviations in song structure, a sing-along chorus, and muted bursts of playful keyboard noise.
