The world of ultra-bland mainstream talk shows must have seemed like a distant fantasy back when Danger Mouse was producing the Grey Album. But here he is, appearing on Ellen Degeneres’ show with his buddies in Broken Bells, no doubt causing fans of the show to wonder why this group of bearded men had suddenly been foisted upon them. Apparently this is a new section of Ellen's show, in which upcoming artists will be aired—perhaps Fuck Buttons could be up next?
But the light pop feel of “The High Road” makes perfect sense in this setting, and this is a resolutely mainstream band—Broken Bells reached the heady heights of number 7 in the Billboard 200 after all. There’s not much to say about this other than it’s competent and professional, never quite scaling the heady heights some of the players have reached in other projects, but pleasant enough during its three and a half minute duration.
