It's hard to recall the pre-rock age in rock 'n' roll without employing some pre-rock instrumentation. Thankfully, there's a tradition of chamber pop, as well as historical fiction and folk songwriting in indie rock that suits British Sea Power rather fine. With a string and horn section that sounds like something off In An Aeroplane Over the Sea, "Come Wander With Me" forms the backdrop to an as of yet undetermined scene in Man of Aran, the classic 1934 Robert Flaherty seafaring film. Cryptically describing a character who "came from the sunset/ came from the sea," it's something of a beautiful track that combines the old and new in classic BSP fashion. Someone should tell Colin Meloy he doesn't need to write elaborate stories, but instead focus on making music this beautiful (he can milk off another story if he wants, as British Sea Power and Neutral Milk Hotel have done).
The Man Of Aran CD/DVD combo package will be released May 5, while the CD itself will be released on June 9.
