Bonny Billy & The Picket Line

"Death to Everyone" (MP3 - Download)

Average Rating: 3.75

Will Oldham is a man of many monikers. His most successful has been as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, who has released critically acclaimed solo albums as well as collaborations and live albums. The most recent, being released by Drag City subsidiary Sea Note, is called Funtown Comedown, and is credited to Bonny Billy & The Picket Line. The album features bluegrass live versions of many songs from the Oldham catalog, including tracks from his early work under the names Palace Brothers and Palace Music.

Take a listen to an unreleased track from the album, a version of "Death to Everyone" that sees the song pick up the tempo from sad dirge to uplifting hymn. [Pitchfork]

I prefer the version on "I See a Darkness."

Something that makes Will Oldham such an amazing artist is his willingness to return to his material again and again and find new life in it. I agree that the ISAD version is definitive, however this is a very inspired re-working. I look to Oldham's live records as much as his studio releases because I know the interpretations of old material will sounds as fresh as new songs. Can't wait for this.

the original version is much sadder, but I still like this one too.

This is pretty good. I couldn't get into Beware, but this could be a solid disc. Some of those Palace songs could use a non-sucky update.

How come this one isn't on the album (at least not on the dragcity website tracklist)? weird...
