"Calgary," the first leak off Bon Iver's new self-titled album, opens with a vibe split between the band's debut and frontman Justin Vernon's Volcano Choir side-project. Vernon pulls you in with his trademark falsetto, which he floats over a sea of church organs before the track erupts. Well, erupts might be an exaggeration, but a whole hell of a lot goes down after about the first minute or so. You get steadily building and toms-heavy drums, synthesizer whines, and a choral breakdown affixed to a pseudo-electric guitar solo. It's all a bit much to digest on an initial listen, though it is clear that Vernon and his Bon Iver bandmates have grown exponentially since 2007's For Emma, Forever Ago.
