At Blonde Redhead's Celebrate Brooklyn show last year, I was trading stories with a friend about our past experiences seeing the band live. One point we kept returning to was how Simone Pace has this loose feel of the beat, like a jazz drummer. Never mind they were playing their more drum machine-ish material from 23 as we were talking.
So pardon me if I'm a little thrown by the band's now-not-so-new-sound. But in a good way. "Here, Sometimes" is like a fortysomething Lykke Li singing over some new school Vanity 6. Yes, Blonde Redhead's Penny Sparkle picks up where 23 left off. Well, I guess that would have been hard not to do because they worked with the Fever Ray and Glasser's production team of Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid. And Alan Moulder is back on the mix.
Blonde Redhead's eighth album (or ninth if you count their score for The Dungeon Masters) Penny Sparkle is due to be released on September 14 on 4AD. And you can download this jawn at their site in exchange for an email.
