The idea of GZA and Black Lips teaming up is an idea that doesn't even look that tantalizing on paper--GZA is a cold, methodical lyrical swordsman, and Black Lips are unhinged, raucuous and messy garage rockers. So it's not surprising that when the two parties got together last week at SXSW for a mercifully short performance that included "Living in the World Today" from Liquid Swords and O.D.B.'s "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" (which GZA often performs) it was a discordant mess. Black Lips looked moderately confused as to what their function was, and GZA struggled to do his rhymes over the din.
It was rumored that the Lips were hoping to get a Wu-Tang member to do a verse on " Drop I Hold " from 200 Million Thousand . Suddenly that seems impossible. [ Stereogum ]
