Black Kids

Union City Blue ft. Cut Copy (Blondie cover live) (Video)

It didn’t occur to me until now, but Black Kids lead singer Reggie Youngblood and Cut Copy’s singer Dan Whitford have exactly the same voice. Both sing in a warbly near British accent-- in Whitford’s case it’s due to him being Australian, but in Youngblood’s it’s due to him wanting to be Robert Smith. Their bands are pretty similar too—all herky-jerky new-new-new-wave.

The bands toured a bit earlier this year, and they have developed something of a relationship. A relationship that’s led them to “Transmission With T-Mobile,” a music show in the U.K., where the two bands performed “Union City Blue” from Blondie’s Eat to the Beat.

It seems a bit excessive to have both bands on stage to tackle the pretty simple tune, and to have two singers singing what Debbie Harry was able to handle on her own, but the bands seem to be having a good time, and there’s a ridiculous amount of hand-clapping. [Pitchfork]
