Here's something I had no idea about: Apparently Shel Silverstein, poet-for-kids extraordinaire, was something of a songwriter, his most famous song being "The Cover of the Rolling Stone," which was recorded by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show in the '70s (the second most famous song being "Boy Named Sue"). On June 8, Sugar Hill will be releasing Twistable Turnable Man, a compilation that features Silverstein songs performed by new artists.
That brings us to the matter at hand here: Black Francis and Joey Santiago of the Pixies cover "The Cover" on the album, and you can hear it over at Stereogum. Santiago's presence is limited to the awesome guitar solos, while Black Francis sounds less like his Pixies version, and more like his rootsy solo material version. Listen here. It's suggested you avoid looking at a real Rolling Stone cover, since it probably has Justin Bieber on it.
Winistorfer, you tater tot, my first review for Prefix was a Dr. Hook collection where I discussed Silverstein's contributions to the band's success. He also wrote "One Piece at a Time" for Johnny Cash.
Oh sweet the mburr / andross e-beef has been rekindled!!!
I'm sorry MBurr. I didn't check for your 40-year-old record review. Because you are so old. And you fart dust.
Is that all you got, Tater Tot?
