Despite the strange title, this track from I Wish We Were an Eagle still finds Callahan at his most direct, and unsurprisingly pained. "Ripped by reality" and trying his best to run away from his memory, Callahan's deep-in-the-throat baritone once again can't mask his broken heart. Not that he really tries to hide it. He has always had a knack for taking interesting paths to get to his characters' isolation, and he pulls off another one on "Eid Ma Clack Shaw" when he sings awkwardly in a foreign language, biting hard on the words without accent and rendering them almost nonsensical. Behind him, the track is basic and stripped down, but the way the strings take on urgency, going from a light keen to a strident edge as the track moves along, provides the perfect backdrop for Callahan's turmoil. I Wish We Were an Eagle is out April 14 on Drag City.

Is it wrong of me to prefer miserable, heartbroken Bill Callahan to the happy, in love version?
