It’s been a strange year for Smog frontman Bill Callahan. Firstly, a song from his A River Ain’t Too Much To Love album was radically reinterpreted by Gil Scott Heron as the title track of his new record. Then there’s the small matter of that Joanna Newsom triple album, which contains a number of songs rumored to be about her relationship with the Smog singer.
Fortunately, Callahan has work of his own to focus on, and Drag City has announced that a solo live album titled Rough Travel for a Rare Thing will be released on March 23. As a preview, this MP3 of “Bowery” from Smog’s “Rock Bottom Riser” EP has been issued, which is full of the kind of beautiful storytelling and gently thumbed guitar that he does so well.

As expected, beautiful.
