It's been just about a decade since we last officially heard from neo soul crooner Bilal, who debut with 2001's fantastic 1st Born Second. When that album dropped, it stood beside some of the better records of its kind from like-minded artists Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, and Maxwell. And, like his contemporaries, Bilal saw his sophomore album, Love for Sale, face endless delays before it was ultimately shelved after it leaked to the web.
The soul singer's back, though, with his recently announced official second project, Airtight's Revenge. And on his latest track, "Free," Bilal ventures in a slightly different, albeit still soulful, direction. The track is infused with elements of funk, dance, and jazz from producer Nottz, with the latter genre bursting through toward the end. It's sounds like Bilal hasn't lost a step as the soul genre continues to gain momentum in 2010. But, to note, this track will not appear on Airtight's Revenge.
You can stream "Free" over at Vibe or you can download it here. Airtight's Revenge is due out Sept. 14 on Plug Research.
still can't believe a new album is coming.
Agreed. Can't wait!
Updated the post. Nottz produced the track and it won't appear on Airtight's Revenge.
