Even though most of the members of Sonic Youth are now well into their fifties, projecting an aura of “coolness” has always been an integral facet of the band’s image. While it’s hard to imagine the full band ever collaborating on something as decidedly un-cool as an acoustic ballad replete with string accompaniment, it’s actually refreshing to hear de-facto Sonic Youth leader Thurston Moore attempt a song so decidedly square. The Beck-produced “Benediction,” the lead single from Moore’s upcoming solo album Demolished Thoughts, might just be the best thing he’s composed in years.
