Here’s a little something for all you hip-hop heads out there. You know the killer opening/title track off Slick Rick’s post-prison album, 1994’s Behind Bars? Well, it turns out that the Warren G-produced version we heard wasn’t the original. At least, that’s what Prince Paul, who first produced the track, revealed this afternoon on his Soundcloud account:
This was the original version of ” Behind bars ” I recorded for Slick Rick during his incarceration in the early 90’s . The song didn’t come out until 94 but to my surprise was remixed by Warren G and Def Jam scrapped my mix . Though Im still considered a writer of the song I was really hoping to have this heard ( well in 92 when we recorded it that is ) . Though it sounds pretty dated its still one of my favorites and I had the pleasure of working with a Genius Slick Rick .
Pretty dope, and it looks like Paul’s gearing up to release even more previously unheard cuts through his Soundcloud in the coming weeks. You can stream “Behind Bars” below.
