The members of Portishead are notoriously slow in releasing new records, so the band's Geoff Barrow had to impose some rigorous restrictions on his new bandmates in Beak>. Barrow formed the band earlier this year and they have a self-titled album ready for release on the Invada label on October 19.
Krautrock and experimental electronic artists such as the Silver Apples are clearly a huge influence on the Beak> sound. The record was recorded with no overdubs over a 12-day period, which is revolutionary for the slow-moving Barrow. Their sound may be somewhat generic, but it’s hard not to get lost in the repetitive bass groove of “Iron Action” once it kicks into gear.
