Beach House

"Play the Game" (Queen Cover) (Stream)

The recently released Dark Was the Night comp had a bunch of random covers (Antony does Dylan, Sufjan does the Castanets, Dave Sitek does the Troggs), but apparently Beach House's hazy and slow-moving cover of Queen's "Play the Game" was so random, it was left off the album (it's available as an iTunes-only bonus). Since Beach House's last album, Devotion, was about making sacrifices for love, "Play the Game" actually makes sense in their oeuvre because the song is about just falling in love and doing what you have to. Beach House predictably turn the song into a sprawled-out burner like their original material, removing a lot of the over the top pomp from Queen's version. I'd take this over Sufjan's Castanets cover any day.
