While Be Your Own Pet's sophomore album, Get Awkward, is a definite step up from their debut, it feels wrong to say the young band has matured. They are still brash and goofy, but who wants punk kids to betray their age bracket? Their Ecstatic Peace label head, a certain Mr. Moore, knows a teenage riot when he hears one. As far as on the ground reportage of petty high-school bullshit goes, "Becky" is hard to top. While the boys in class live and die on the attentions of their female classmates, they're mainly unaware that those girls are locked in same-sex psychodrama far more intense than who likes who. Alliances can shift quickly in the cafeteria trenches. The song's titular girl is the new BFF of singer Jemina Pearl's former gal pal, though it's hard to fathom why anyone would ditch such a cool chick. She's smart, tough, independent--basically everything that Avril's marketing team tried in vain to project. Oh, and she's got a knife. While her bandmates' seductive strums mainly stay out of the way of hilariously bitchy detail ("Give me back, all the clothes you borrowed/ don't give me bullshit, bring them to school tomorrow"), their demented devotion on the shout-along sections is entirely understandable.
...I LOVE Be Your Own Pet...I love their debut and can't wait to hear all of Get Awkward...they make other 'punk' bands sound TAME...I love their wildness, thrashiness, charm, humor and personality
i like this band.
This girl scares me. And the song makes me want to break out the locomotion.
Based on the myspace selection of tunes, yeah im kinda digging these guys too.
But now Ive got 'the locomotion' in my head.
