To promote their upcoming UK tour, Los Angeles punks FIDLAR have released a studio recording of their live staple “AWWWKWAARRRDDD.” Featuring British singer-songwriter Kate Nash, the track is a sensitive, brutally honest departure from the ramshackle, reckless abandon of FIDLAR’s previous work. “AWWWKWAARRRDDD” sets aside the band’s usual thematic fare — underpaid, overworked, under the influence — for the more rudimentary issue of being “undersexed,” now so integral to the idealized “20-something lifestyle.”

Yet in the hands of FIDLAR, these cultural cliches are stripped of the elements that generally turn genuine reflections on love (or the lack of it) into laughably stale platitudes. “AWWWKWAARRRDDD” feels, well — awkward. There’s a strained whine to lead singer Zac Carp’s voice that almost forces the listener to (theoretically) turn away in embarrassment. TMI, dude.

“AWWWKWAARRRDDD” won’t make an appearance on FIDLAR’s upcoming full-length debut LP, scheduled for release on Jan. 22 in the US and Feb. 4 in the UK. The track is, however, available to download on the band’s Soundcloud.
