This new track from Asobi Seksu's upcoming album Hush turns down the hazy atmosphere that shaped their last effort, Citrus. But the move towards something a little clearer is a good one on "Familiar Light". The band still has a thick layer of guitars and Larry Gorman's propulsive drums to drive the track, but by thinning the haze Yuki Chikudate's vocals come beautifully to the forefront. On Citrus, her voice was just another ghostly swirl in the band's warm sound. But here it is out front and full-throated, and when she hits those crazily high notes she sounds charged with emotion instead of airy. Paring down the haze also spotlights the band's knack for melody, and "Familiar Light" is as immediately catchy as anything they've put out so far. Hush is due out from Polyvinyl on February 17.
