Antony Hegarty returned to Jools Holland’s Later studio last night (Oct. 12) to celebrate the release of his new album, Swanlights. The record is a familiar mixture of Antony’s baritone vocals, an extremely spare musical backing that continues his plundering of minimalist traditions, and the occasional diversion into mid-paced Stax-style soul flourishes.
Here, Antony performs “Thank You For Your Love” from that album, alone at the piano and minus his usual band, the Johnsons. He possesses the kind of voice that can easily fill a room all by itself, and so it proves here, with Antony delivering an affecting version of this song, all the while flanked by a group of Brits sitting at tables and swigging beer.
