Animal Collective

"Water Curses"

Average Rating: 8.00

Part of the pleasure in Strawberry Jam was the sense that the members of Animal Collective might be on the vege of unknotting their thickly tangled sound. The album's songs could hardly be called minimal, but there was space in the mix for the relatively direct lyrics to connect immediately without painstaking excavation by the listener. But I guess the recording session didn't excise the clutter bug entirely.

"Water Curses," the title track from a soon to be released EP of Jam leftovers, uses that record's churning digital slot machine effects in a piled-on manner than better resembles the songwriting methodology of its predecessor, Feels. Avery Tare nearly fulfills his lyrical desire to "be like water," seeping through the track's dense moving parts without solidifying into a tangible shape. Notably, he never builds to the impassioned shrieks that have become his vocal trademark. But even without that climactic release, the intuitive gasps and twirls in his delivery remain distinctive and inspired.

I like this more than a few tracks of SJ. Still not amazed or anything though.

i don't understand you guys, Strawberry Jam is amazing, and this song is amazing. Pretty much everything they do is light years ahead of anybody else.

I'm really liking it, although I feel like the second half doesn't match the first. But than again the first half of this song is one of my favorite things AC has done. Really good song though.

at first listen 'water curses' the song just flew right by me, much like running water in the background - i let it go and gave in to the textured, more comfortable collective on the 3 remaining tracks of this EP.

on second listen something popped (not my ears) - i started dancing inside - listening more to the detail and structure i was thwarted into a new sense of songwriting and groove that was never before realized with the collective.

this track is fresh.

this track exhumes all that is holy in the world of evolution and the tight moleculer structure that is H2O and animal collective together as one.

most excellent.

this is pretty awesome, i like this better than SJ, but only slightly. i like the thickness of the sound personally, and the chord pregression is amazing.

I think I liked the more layered sounds of the Feels era better than the louder, more naked vocals of Strawberry Jam. Im glad they're leaning back to the old style of editing. The song itself fits it with Strawberry Jam's catchy, fast, melodies and sound clips of bubbles and old video games sprinkled in the background but it sounds more finished then allot of the songs on Strawberry Jam. I cant wait to hear the rest. I'll probably give into the temptation and torrent the leak now and buy it later.

this song is a new level of writing and composition for these guys! simply amazing, there is so much going on in this track.

seriously stop saying you don't like a song or album by animal collective. every last thing they released is a beautiful work of art. even you, jeff, writer of this article, is an idiot for suggesting that listeners have "painstaking evacuation" to select songs.

if there is anything by animal collective that any of you refuse to like, it's simply because you are close minded morons. so stop letting people know how dull and idiotic you all are.

strawberry jam is incredible. water curses is incredible. and everything prior is incredible. incredible.

But why, DAVN?

Isn't calling something incredible without saying why just as idiotic as calling it bad without saying why?

Plus, I'm not sure Jeff doesn't like AC or Strawberry Jam or even this track. (And he said excavation, not evacuation.)

"un-knotting their thickly tangled sound" is probably the last thing that any early fan of AC wants to happen.

It's the tangled up 'hear something new even on the 100th listen' that is attractive and deciphering the beautiful parts under insanity that made all that early stuff so interactive and feel like that salvia familiar like watching your childhood effect.

not that there isnt stuff to discover buried in these songs but its not as wonderous.

This stuff is good but its more like hear something new up to the 50th listen instead of 100th listen if that makes sense. i wish it went back to more raw less produced and deliberate sounds.

not bad but not the best from them i hope this big tour doesnt mess up their heads
