Adele’s 21 is fast picking up critical plaudits for her old-beyond-her-years vocal stylings, and this performance of “Someone Like You” on the Brit Awards last night (Feb. 15) will most likely have swayed a whole new group of admirers. That mini revival of singers (Winehouse, Duffy, etc.) belting out old soul and jazz influenced material may be over now, but Adele proves here that she has the staying power to outlive any faddish trends, principally because her voice has a raw beauty to it that conveys palpable emotion with each passing syllable.
