The Timeless Concert Series apparently featured more than a tribute to J Dilla and performances by Arthur Verocai and Mulatu Astatke. The trio of concerts also saw several DJs, including Cut Chemist and Madlib, take the stage to warm up the crowd. And for the Astatke show, Quantic did more than just show off his skills on the ones and twos. The DJ spun an hour’s worth of vinyl that he found during a trip to Ethiopia, where he met Astatke and began discussing bringing the jazz legend to Los Angeles to perform. Quantic’s set is filled with the warm crackle of the more than 30-year-old records that offer a variety of sounds, from funky-as-hell rhythms to more traditional chants and everything in between.
