Listen: Tobacco’s Warped Remix Of The Black Keys’ “I Got Mine”

The Black Keys are ripe for reinterpretation, mainly because they themselves do the same thing to old soul, R&B, blues, and rock tropes. Leave it to Tobacco–the enigmatic leader of Pennsylvania weirdos Black Moth Super Rainbow–to drag out the Keys’ grimier elements and turn them inside-out.

Tobacco reimagines “I Got Mine”–off the Keys’ 2008 release Attack & Release–as a maxed-out jam. The original was produced by Danger Mouse, but it fits right alongside the Keys’ lengthy blues-rock stompers. Tobacco actually used many of the same elements on his 2008 song “Super Gum”, but on the remix, Tobacco highlights a delicious breakbeat and sands down the whole thing with a power-tool-inspired drone. With the blippy keyboard melody chirping in the background, the whole thing ends up sounding like vintage Beck–past, present, and future all in barely two minutes. Take a listen below.
