It’s rare that much time passes without a new J Mascis project, and the singer/guitarist has just announced the release of a new album: an instrumental work under the name Heavy Blanket. The record will be released on May 8 via Outer Battery, complete with cover art from Wire contributor Savage Pencil.
These recordings date back from Mascis’ time in hardcore band Deep Wound, and were apparently constructed out of his desire to move away from that sound. “He wanted to shed the pretentiousness and elitism that had risen around him – to slow things down and turn the volume way, way up,” reads a note on the Outer Battery site.
Mascis recorded six tracks for the Heavy Blanket project and he returned to them last year, calling on bandmates Johnny Pancake and Pete Cougar to finish the job they started decades ago. The album will be released on CD, LP and a limited edition purple vinyl album. Check out a preview from it below.
