Is that offensive? I mean, I really don't know. He is from China isn't he? And he's a man, right?

it's regarded as a racist remark but the dude probably doesn't know that. same thing with calling someone oriental.

yeah, it's just real archaic and the connotation is not a pleasant one.

I think oriental is more offensive. It's not like dude was meaning chinaman in a negative way, he just said it as his country of origin.

i think Yao was called a Chinaman in his rookie year too by a broadcaster. didn't seem malicious just that the guy didn't know better

No yeah, it doesn't seem hateful, it's just that "chinaman" in America has a negative connotation.
For instance, I have an ex-girlfriend whose father used to call me "Jesse Jackson." Fucked up right?
He called her boyfriend before me "the Chinaman."
The sportscaster in that video just seemed very matter of fact, but the word itself is not pleasant. |

Agreed on everyone's points. And I believe that was Steve Kerr who called Yao the "Chinaman." On a sidenote, tonight as I was walking home from the gym, these Jamaican guys on the corner called me "Jackie Chan."
