It seems absurd to recruit that early.  Anything can happen in 4 years...

I only noticed this because the guy has the same last name as me.  How can I cash in on this?? =P

 

Young athletes committing to colleges raises concerns for all involved

"I find the practice appalling, quite frankly," said Brit Kirwan, chancellor of the University of Maryland system and co-chair of the Knight Commission, which urges reform in college athletics. "I certainly hope the NCAA will step in and put a stop to it. I certainly will voice my objection to (NCAA President) Myles Brand and others at the NCAA."

However, Kentucky President Lee Todd said he supports Gillispie and understands the nature of big-time basketball. If Kentucky doesn't offer a top prospect a scholarship, another school will. "You run across these kids who are talented at a young age, and they are going to be recruited by someone, and he (Gillispie) is under the pressure to build a pipeline in his program. I can't fault Coach trying to build up the pipeline."

Michael Avery, an eighth-grade guard from Lake Sherwood, Calif., who turned 15 in March, and Vincent Zollo, a ninth-grade forward from Greenfield, Ohio, verbally accepted scholarship offers from Gillispie, according to their parents...
