New details have emerged about the alleged $2 million extortion plot against David Letterman.

In a press conference held by Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau Friday morning, prosecutors identified the suspect in the plot as CBS News producer Robert "Joe" Halderman and outlined the case against him but declined to comment on his possible motives.

Morgenthau said that Halderman, a 48 Hours producer, had been charged with attempted grand larceny between the period of Sept. 9 and Sept. 30.

He basically said this:

A few weeks ago, a former CBS producer left a package in his car, and in said package it said the CB producer would tell everyone "terrible things" Dave Letterman has done.

Letterman meets up with dude, dude demands 2 mill to keep quiet.

Letterman calls Manhattan district attorney, D.A. says that's black mail. They set up a sting.

The sting involves Letterman actually handing over the check, the dude says he still might tell everyone the "terrible things" he's done.

Dude is arrested later. Dave has to go testify before Grand Jury.

Then he explains to the audience that the "terrible things" is that he's been straight banging many, many women on the show. Whether that means he's cheating on his wife isn't clear, but it seems likely.

Then he says, I just thought I'd tell you guys all about it before it gets out.

Scene.

Yeah they did. His lighthearted delivery of such a heavy personal topic was pro.

Just watched it.

Yeah, that could have been really akward, but he did a good job of keeping it light.

I mean, two million bucks? Isn't that totally lowballed? He's going to be in a cell sitting next to Dr. Evil.

Yeah, that did seem sorta low. But maybe the long-con was to get all his money, and the short con was for the 2 milli. /professor of conning people over here.
