I'm saying that people aren't using the term hipster the way you use it. Instead people are using the term more as a way someone looks. People in the video were not defininig hipster the way you're defining it. |

Was there not also a hippie look? A punk look? A yuppie look?
When did the word of the random Billysburg frequenters become authoritative of the definition of hipster? I would have loved to see more from the American Nerd guy, but his snippit was not satisfactory and actually deceptive. He makes an argument much more similar to mine in his book (which I've actually read). |

when people use the term hipster now they're not using your definition of the term.
to answer your answer the Billysburg frequenters definition became authoritative years ago.
The same way that kids who listen to My Chemical Romance and wear black eyeliner became the definition of "emo." |

I know this is a hipster response but I agree with Chuck Klosterman's view on the subject.
"You know who hates hipsters? Hipsters hate hipsters because hipsters are the only one's who know who the hipsters are. In New York it's become very difficult to distinguish hipsters and retarded people; I'll see a guy on the bus with his pants on backwards and a pale on his head and I'll think 'that guy's either retarded or he's the coolest guy around'."

Dave, youre starting to repeat yourself. You've repeated the My Chemical Romance line twice, and you've said people don't define it the way I do anymore about a dozen times. But you haven't actually answered any of my points about whether or not that definition holds true at least in the theoretical sense, whether or not people can be easily defined as hipsters anymore. You're basically saying that definition no longer applies because people misinterpret it? That doesn't really work when you consider the examples I've raised.

I am saying the same things but I feel you have been too. I also have no idea what you're asking me.

Basically your definition might have worked years ago, but now it doesn't work because people don't use the term "hipster" that way. Using my emo comparison again, it's like using the word "emo" today and referring to a band like sunny day real estate although no one would think you're referring to them.
