Neither candidate impressed me. Palin didn't have any Couric moments and Biden didn't have any serious gaffes but both sounded coached and contrived.
No knockout punches even though there were a lot of open looks for both Biden and Palin. Biden in particular could have destroyed Palin on the gay marriage issue. He played it safe and somewhat agreed with her rather than telling her that a lot of the rights she wants to protect for gays hinge on the question of marriage.
A lot of the media is calling this a Palin victory.

A lot? I honestly haven't seen that at all. I've seen some things that said she held up well, etc. but I'd be surprised if "a lot of the media" call it a Palin victory. I'm very obviously pro Obama, but I don't see things through rose-colored glasses.

Biden made me happy to be a registered democrat. Palin kept talking about Joe America or Joe Sixpack or whatever and the whole time I kept thinking, "Damn, Biden is Joe Sixpack." He was golden EVERY time he went back to New Jersey in his comments, and I think he swept most of the truly undecideds to the democrats when he got choked up while talking about his family. As someone said after the debate, Biden's comments about fatherhood did more for gender equality than Palin's presence as a woman in the debate.

Daba-
A lot of the media outlets were calling it a Palin win right after the debate last night. It was like they feared people would say they were being unfair. But now, this morning, everyone's sayig Biden crushed her.

The thing about the gay marriage back-and-forth is that Palin got confused and contradicted her and McCain's platform. She very clearly said that she is looking to give full benefits and equality to civil unions. Biden didn't go in on her because she essentially agreed with him, or at least forgot to state where she disagrees with him. I love the "General McClellan" comment. Civil War, yo!
And isn't mentioning any sort of amendment to the Constitution basically political poison now? Red staters especially love their constitution AS IT WAS WRITTEN. That was such a huge mistake on her part. Follow up talking about the failures of Dick Cheney with a discussion of how she'd like to expand the role of the Vice President. That. Is. Terrifying. She's pushing herself as an executive—that's her lane. And now she wants to pass laws as a legislator. Oh no.

I think she had 20 phrases that she went in with and said each one 20 times. Every time she said "hockey" this or "Alaska" that I wanted to punch the screen(although with her lack of experience I guess she has nothing else to refer to). She looked foolish on the gay marriage question. Both basically believe the same thing. Obama has done a good job of going around the fact that he doesn't belive in gay marriage. I don't think she seeks to have "power" in the Legislative branch...I think she just didn't know what she was talking about. I don't think she's as vindictive as some make her out to be. Overall, I thought she did a decent job. There have been worse VP debaters.
Biden is a very skillfill debater but he comes across as a typical politician, with that plastered smile and classic twists of facts. I don't know why he wouldn't just admit that he disagreed with Obama about the war- along with other things in the Primary? And I cringed when he referred to himself in the third person...he referred to himself too much all together. But I actually like him more now than before. And I think he definitely "won."

I guess Biden did win but he was still unimpressive to me. When Palin pulled the flip-flop card, Biden shoulda been right there with the Bridge to Nowhere reference.

Factcheck.org and Politifact.com has a their fact check up. It looks like Palin had more serious misleads.

Biden misrepresented McCain mumerous times. I'm sure he will bring it up in the next debate. I'm still not a big fan of Biden but finally hearing him speak helped.
Palin just couln't get people's names right. But this wasn't a train wreck like many people predicted. As former Democratic Vp candidate Geraldine A Ferraro indicated, this was a positive night for all females.

Palin more than just got names wrong. She misrepresented Obama on taxes
I think Palin got a boost because of low expectations coming out of the Couric interviews. Not trainwrecking is perceived a win for her.

NBC pointed out flaws with a lot of Biden's claims about McCain's votes for funding the troops, budgets, and taxes. Biden also misrepresented himself. I know Palin was wrong about Obama as well...but Biden devoted so much time to bashing McCain.
I don't know...the fact that a former Democratic female Vp candidate said that she went toe-toe with Biden and that she's glad her granddaughters could see this means something. She wasn't awesome. But I think she far exceeded people's expectations. |
