Oof. Kids in high school drink all the time, but this still isn't a good look especially considering Sarah Palin was just announced as running for VP with John McCain.
There's probably a lot more dirt to come...

I hate the Republicans as much as anyone, but this shouldn't be a factor in an election.
I know it probably will be, but its a shame.
Whats more shocking is, no one looked into this in advance!!

I dunno, as unfair as it might be to attack her children, there's some validity to it. Sarah Palin has an underage, boozing, knocked-up daughter. This woman can't run a family, how in the hell can she run a country?
Choosing Palin also refelcts poorly on McCain. How out of it is this guy, if he chooses a running mate who, on top of all that, is currently under investigation for abuse of power and is a former member of the Alaska Independence Party? Plus, it's only been a few days, who knows how much more dirt there might be on this woman. McCain sure doesn't, because they clearly didn't bother with the vetting process. |

I agree it reflects poorly on McCain, but its not really fair to say she can't run a family. EVERY kid does stupid stuff at some point. Without exception. Its part of growing up.
Saying she can't run a family is totally unfair. |

@GM Zombis- for reals
It's poor character to judge a person by the decisions of others. I don't see eye-to-eye with her on everything politically, but Palin comes across as a very carring mother. Just because her daughter chose to have unprotected sex and is pregnant doesn't make the mother a bad person or a poor parent. That's terrible reasoning. As for the drinking, why is that even an issue? |

It's not the decision of others that I'm using to condemn her, it's her lack of control over her child. Yes, all kids drink, but not all kids are photographed several times with booze AND get pregnant by 17. It suggests to me that she doesn't have a handle on what's going on in her family, so how can she know what's going on in a country. Plus, the fact that she's a Republican, the party that constantly views itself as the party of "family values" amplifies the problem. You know if Obama's kids were older and into shit like this the Republicans would be all over it.
Plus, what does it say about her political stance, that abstinence-only education in schools is the way to go, when her daughter up and gets pregnant out of wedlock? Nevermind the fact that she herself eloped at 24 and had her fist child 8 months later. The woman is a liability, plain and simple. |

What else are folks - kids or otherwise - in Alaska supposed to do to keep warm besides drink and shack up?

That's pretty strong language. Who are we to condemn her? You're still judging her by what her daughter has done. Every kid drinks in high school and I'm sure most have photos with them drinking. And so what it the Republicans would be all over it...that doesn't mean the Democrats shouldn't take the higher road. It may be a problem for the party and she may be a liability for McCain, but saying she would be a bad VP because her daughter is pregnant and drinks is unfounded. Some of the greatest parents I know had kids who ended up sliding into some pretty steep crap....much worse than this. They are excellent people. I think Obama has handled this perfectly. Didn't his mom have him when was 18? She may have been pregnant at 17. In any case, it's virtually the same thing. Bill and Hillary Clinton haven't had control over their family life so nicely but it didn't affect his ability to be a solid president.

good point. Well I know you can go to "lighting houses" where you can lie in light during the months when it's always dark. I hear they throw some pretty wild anti-depression parties.

I agree with almost everything says. Looks bad on the party of 'family values' and a candidate who is pro-abstinence, shows poor judgement on McCains part, shows she might be a liability ect ect. But I still can't condemn her for something millions of kids do.
I feel bad for the girl though. As if getting pregnant at 17 didn't have enough hurdles... now shes all over the news in a matter of 3 days |

Obama has come out and said families are off limits and said this shouldn't be an issue.
What is an issue: McCain, a 72 yr. old cancer survivor, has chosen a VP that has been governor for only 20 months (mayor of town of 6,000 before that.) and has absolutely no foreign policy credentials at all. McCain met her only twice before he made his decision and thinks she's fit to be the most powerful person on earth should he not be able to fill his duties.
What's even more of an issue is that McCain is a toolbox. |

"family values" as defined by Republicans, in part, is anti-homosexuality. Cheany has a lesbian daughter. Apparently -and unfortunately, it didn't hurt them.
This stuff shouldn't even be an issue. |

I think family reflects more on female candidates than male candidates... obviously not fair, but it kinda seems like thats the way it is. So the Cheney example isn't all that significant.

I think voters are more sympathetic with female candidates as well so it balances out. I think people will relate to them as more of a "normal" family. I don't think this stuff will hurt her. I think she will simply hurt herself.
