Still weird thinking that 100,000 albums sold in a year is a lot. I think of Ratatat as a moderately sized indie band and they've sold 12,000 to date. Sort of blows my mind...

Billboard 200:

  • #4 Coldplay - Viva La Vida [90,322 this week, down 20%, 1,323,246 to date]
  • #16 Beck - Modern Guilt [28,970 this week, down 66%, 113,501 to date]
  • #30 The Hold Steady - Stay Positive [24,249]
  • #42 Weezer - Weezer (Red Album) [12,712 this week, down 17%, 271,922 to date]
  • #51 Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs [11,679 this week, down 10%, 343,544 to date]
  • #68 Sigur Ros - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust [8,686 this week, down 10%, 63,308 to date]
  • #70 Jakob Dylan - Seeing Things [8,522 this week, up 47%, 68,023 to date]
  • #107 My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges [6,703 this week, down 16%, 107,962 to date]
  • #122 Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes [5,633 this week, down 10%, 43,780 to date]
  • #127 Radiohead - In Rainbows [5,411 this week, down 8%, 580,152 to date]
  • #132 Flight Of The Conchords - Flight Of The Conchords [5,358 this week, down 8%, 165,731 to date]
  • #134 Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend [5,056 this week, down 10%, 271,338 to date]
  • #135 R.E.M. - Accelerate [5,004 this week, up 57%, 305,264 to date]
  • #151 The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing [4,422 this week, down 13%, 50,312 to date]
  • #157 MGMT - Oracular Spectacular [4,216 this week, down 1%, 117,597 to date]
  • #161 Ratatat - LP3 [4,112 this week, down 47%, 11,993 to date]
  • #182 M.I.A. - Kala [3,690 this week, up 35%, 237,398 to date]

I think the most surprising thing here is that there are 70,000 people who bought the new Jakob Dylan.

I wonder if Radiohead would be platinum with a traditional release.

No, I don't think they would. It has more to do with their fanbase. Coldplay's number one because a large portion of their fanbase (read: teenage girls) go out and buy CD's, while Radiohead's typical fan (a hooded, headphoned hipster) usually downloads his music. Or buys it on 180 gram vinyl.

Radiohead probably has its share of teenage girl fans that we don't like to think about.

Yeah, that makes sense. You'd also think that that Fleet Foxes record would sell at least as much as the My Morning Jacket. Anyone that likes MMJ would be incredibly familiar with Fleet Foxes.

The thing with MMJ is that they've been around for a while now so they've built up a strong and very loyal following. Fleet Foxes has had good buzz, but not buzz like a Vampire Weekend

I think Fleet Foxes kicks VW's trash...but I'm still surprised that a band like that is selling that many records.  I guess people have been pitchforked.

I can't believe MGMT sold 100,00 +, I had no idea they were that popular.

Also Kala is pushing 250,000. That surprised me too.

Looks like it'll be one of the more packed shows at McCarren on Sunday since MGMT are playing.
