MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — A Superior Court jury has convicted a Southington therapist of conspiracy charges in the 2003 attempted shooting and the 2002 beating of Boston Celtics basketball star Ray Allen's stepfather.
Ernest Garlington, 39, who counseled at-risk youths in the Waterbury area, faces up to 65 years in prison after being convicted Wednesday of several crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.
Judge Patrick J. Clifford is scheduled to sentence Garlington on Jan. 17. Garlington had been free on $750,000 bond, but the judge increased bail to $1.25 million after the verdict. Garlington was being held at the Hartford Correctional Center Thursday.
Prosecutors said Garlington and other men took part in the plots to attack psychologist Derek Hopson. They said Garlington wanted Hopson dead because he claimed Hopson was bothering his wife, Darlene Powell-Garlington, who was previously married to Hopson.
Hopson, who is now married to Allen's mother, Flora Allen-Hopson, was shot at outside the mental health clinic at Middlesex Hospital, where he worked, in May 2003. He escaped injury. He was also beaten with a golf club in the same location in August 2002...
