And I still need to hear that Brother Ali album. Due most to Mr. Martin up there. Nice PM review.

Hell yeah, Brooklynati is a fantastic record.
And thanks, Matt! Yeah, that Brother Ali album was just extremely well executed. |

encapsulating 2009 (so far) in 10 albums was hard for me, there was ample goodness imo...
1. Raekwon - ObfclV.2 2. Animal Collective - MPP 3. the xx - XX 4. BK-one - Radio Do Canibal 5. jj - jj n° 2 6. Phoenix - WAP7. John Frusciante - The Empyrean 8. Mos Def - The Ecstatic 9. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest 10. St. Vincent - Actor
(Blakroc is likely to be a post hoc inclusion) |

I can definitely co-sign the BK-One and jj records. I thought about throwing those on mine, too, but I had to make room for my "metal" side, ha.

I have a copy of Bk-One due in the mail any day now, and I can't wait to hear it. In a related note, the more I think about it, the more P.O.S. may end up in the top 10. Great stuff, and along with Raekwon, it has totally consumed my 09 hip-hop listening. Hence, missing Mos Def and Brother Ali, both of which I will soon make up for.
Other hip-hop I missed?

Ah, you haven't heard BK-One yet?! Oh shit, man, it's really well done. And I agree, that P.O.S. album is fantastic. Just didn't make my Top 10 for some reason.
As for hip-hop you might have missed, aside from Mos and Ali: -Diamond District - In The Ruff -14KT - Nowalataz (free instrumental album dedicated to J Dilla) -The Grouch & Eligh - Say G&E! -Finale - A Pipe Dream And A Promise -Brother Ali - The Truth Is Here EP -DJ Signify - Of Cities
There are others I'm forgetting but that should do it. |

But, I don't really listen to new music, so I don't have a say. Relapse was good =p

Can't believe no one's got Grizz Bear as their number 1. That shit's timeless, just you wait and see!

Grizzly Bear is definitely one of my favorite records this year, and probably a record I'll play for a while to come. But here's what keeps striking me about it: It's gorgeous in exactly the ways I expect it to be. There's not much in it that surprises. It's more an observation than a judgment, and I'll give the album all the credit in the world for being as good as it is, and for being something I really respond to. I just wish there was a tiny bit more surprises, or risks taken, or something. I know, I'm knit-picking. So be it.

I'm still not quite to a list yet, but here's a few more I forgot about last time I named a bunch of people:
Akron/Family - Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free Built to Spill - There is No Enemy Califone - All My Friends Are Funeral Singers Super Furry Animals - Dark Days/Light Years
Megafaun keeps climbing the list with every listen. And I finally got Brother Ali and it is damn good, might be too late an entry to make the list, but I will the play the hell out of it regardless. |
