What do you guys think of this article? Does he have a point or is he just re-hashing the same tired points of people hating on new school rap?

It's kind of a whiny article, and offering Slaughterhouse as better hip-hop than Drake is a tenuous stretch at best.

I don't listen to Drake, and all this hype over him makes me less and less interested. The article makes some great points on why you should hate on Drake. But mainstream hiphop has been putting out cookie cutter substance challenged stuff for years. I don't see the difference between Drake and Mase, other than the decade they were released in. I agree mostly that Drake's success is probably unwarranted, but that's why I simply choose to ignore him. There's other shit to pay attention to in hip hop. Let the kids have their candy. |

IF drake is the direction that mainstream hip hop is going nowadays then I am happy for it, I think he is a good MC, and this is in stark contrast to my when I used to be an anything-outside-of-rawkus-records-isn't-real-hip-hop underground music fan.... His lines are witty, and his arrogance is a lot more practical than MC's like Lil Wayne saying he sweats money and the bank is a shower...
I usually hate on local (Toronto) rappers, because for the most part there hasn't been any good ones in the past, but I really feel good that Drake could be the iconoclasm...
That being said, Comeback Season was way better than So Far Gone... best I ever had is a terrible track, and his verse on Forever is probably my least favourite out of all the rappers involved... So maybe I will have to reevaluate in the not-so-distant future... |
