Has anyone else tried out Songbird yet? I've tried some of the betas and it was quickly removed from my PC due to magestic amounts of terribleness. 1.0 was released on the 2nd, and it's pretty good for a player. Not as bulky as iTunes, and not as cryptic as Winamp. I don't like the iTunes GUI ripoff, but it seems to be working well. I still have to try syncing it with my iPod.

Oh, it's the Firefox guys and some of the guys who originally coded Winamp.

I still like Amarok the best, but that's not out for Windows yet.

Yeah. So, jesus I'm bored.

I keep reading about Songbird and have been trying to get a Prefix writer to put up a news article on it, but no luck. I like the idea of it, but not sure how well it'll work. I'll give it a shot this week.

It's got some great ideas behind it (like subscribing to blogs for music), but it's definitely still buggy. I've encountered times when a track I've got queued plays, but doesn't seem to output any sound at all. I have to manually restart the track for it to go. I also tried to edit the id3 info for all of my music (I just realized that last.fm has been tagging all of my scrobbled tracks with identification numbers in the "comment" field) and the program bombed. This doesn't really surprise me, as there's an awful amount of music on my machine, and a lot with different versions of id3. Winamp choked, too.

The biggest problem, in my opinion, is when the panes I've got open (last.fm reccomendations, last.fm album art, and lyrics) don't update  fast enough when I switch tracks quickly. I might end up listening to Beethoven, and it's got info about Belong because I quickly skipped over a Belong track. Even worse, I was using the extension that allows Songbird to interact with the official last.fm client and the same slow-update thing happened, so the correct tracks weren't being scrobbled. It's not a huge problem, since it updates fine for the next track, and to try and correct this I've since switched over to the in-program scrobbler.  However, there's no real reliable way to tell what's being scrobbled, so the same phenomenon of all the metainfo panes being one or two songs back might be the same thing that's happening with the audioscrobbler that's built-in. You really can't tell.

Anyhoo, I'm still using it because I hate iTunes and I want to support an open-source media player. I like to know what a program is doing to my library, something iTunes seems designed to hide, and something Winamp makes somewhat convoluted. I think it's going to be great, but it's going to take a few more revisions before it's really the open-source killer app I need.

I've also heard its been eating iPods. Which is pretty bad. I don't trust it, so I haven't connected it yet. I don't know if it's the same code from ml_ipod or whatnot, but I can't really trust killing my ipod to find out.

That's all. Just wanted to gripe and give people a heads up and some info.

The development name for this one was "fugazi," so I had to try it out.

Though what "fugazi" stands for isn't the best of choices for an opensource player.

I prefer Peel. I just don't want to pay for it.
