When Nirvana and Green Day hit the music scene, both made a major impact to say the least. Their music is different and the timing was a few years apart, but both bands changed music then and the effects will be long lasting. Who though, do you think will leave the bigger mark on music in the end?

I don't know, i think Green Day sadly has made a bigger impact on many bands and kids. They're usually a good stepping stone for kids to get into punk rock. Then until someone more knowledgable tells them about real punk bands :)

Bigger mark? Nirvana, by far. It is not even a matter of  which band is better liked by kids. Nirvana marked the change in a generation. That cannot be said for Green Day, in my memory, they get lost in the mix of wanna be punks.

that's true I Suppose. I think if Kurt Cubain didn't die, I don't think they would have left that big of a mark.

If this was 8 years ago I would have said Green Day, but pop-punk is dead as doornail. So-Cal and Florida dried out that well a while ago. Labels like Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords are shadows of their former selves and various Blink182 offshoot bands aren't selling records like they used too.

Even though Nirvana weren't total trailblazers, they definitely had a more original sound than Green Day. NOFX, The Descendents, Operation Ivy and the Offspring were all making waves before Green Day. If American Idiot wasn't such a hue pop record I don't think we'd be having this discussion. I also have a feeling if Kurt Cobain were alive today Nirvana would probably be disbanded and he would be making much different music and would have grown artisticly.

Going from Nevermind to In Utero you can see how those are very different records, expecially for a genre known for repeating itself.Cobain had expressed how he wanted to do some drastically different things.

I wouldn't call pop punk/punk dead as a door nail. It's not in the mainstream as much, if not at all and I'm fine with that. I'd rather have it underground. I agree with your statement of Epitaph because they just continue to release shitty screamo, hip hop albums now. Fat Wreck on the other hand have been contining to release great records.

Florida: Against Me!, Less Than Jake, True North, New Found Glory, Jack Off Jill, etc.

Maybe not dead as a doornail but really not producing too many exciting bands. Many bands started branching to either emo, screamo, hardcore or metalcore.

In regards to Fat Wreck Chords, I do find a good record here and there but largely I find releases of the last few years to be mostly retread, imo.  Stuff like the Lawrence Arms and No Use For A Name
