Das Racist and Odd Future take names.by Sasha Frere-Jones

 

Das Racist is a trio based in Brooklyn, and Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All is a ten-member collective from Los Angeles. Das Racist (“Das” is a slurred “That’s,” not the German article) is subtly and insistently political, and Odd Future is blatantly and insistently asocial, but both are hip-hop acts as unsettling as they are entertaining. You could call them hip-hop punks. But all the tools required to rattle people are already inside the genre; there just aren’t that many rappers waving their box cutters around so freely
