I met Quentin Tarantino last week. Ha! That's pretty cool, eh.

I couldn't think of good stuff to ask, but here's the whole transcript.

Can I have an autograph?

"Yeah, no problem."

Between the time you finish a script and the movie gets cast and then you're on the set, how much change takes place?

"None really. The actors are there to interpret my play, not the other way round." (mm, close enough)

Do you pick all the music for your films?

"Yes." (nice!)

Can I get a picture?

"That'd be a drag."

And then he went over to get a glass of red wine. Oh, and somewhere in thar he mentioned how he's hopeful re Inglorious Bastards come Oscar time. Thaz it.

did he talk really fast or was he animated?

I just added Inglorious Bastards to my Netflix queue.

He was both. He seemed liked a really nice guy who was simultanously aware of how awesome he is. It is also a personal reminder that the next time my g/f has a friend of a friend who's premiering a (boring) art film, that I should be enthusiastically inclined to go.

Pretty tame choices. The Thai action movie (Chocolate) that he mentions is available on Netflix on demand. Inglorious Basterds was probably my favorite movie of the year.

What'd you like about Inglorious Basterds, MFB? And how do you compare it to his other stuff?

Basterds totally took me by surprise. I really didn't like Kill Bill 1 or 2. It felt pompous, overlong, self-important and worst of all for a Tarantino movie lacked fun. The director's cut of Death Proof is a must-watch if you haven't seen it. It's a really interesting film and it definitely benefits from having a longer running time to work its magic. That was the first inkling that Tarantino might be up to something interesting on Basterds. However, the ad campaign and hype relied heavily on the "Brad Pitt kills nazis" premise so I wasn't optimistic. Once I actually saw the film, however, I was blown away. Brad Pitt is a supporting character in a surreal and beautifully released tapestry of World War II Western Europe. The majority of the film relies on strong dialogue and character development, not to mention it is in German and French. Basterds is a sprawling art film, a convincing re-imagining of history and - to my mind - the last word on Nazi imagery. Not to mention it's hilarious, surprising, filled with unbelievable performances (I am pretty sure Christoph Waltze will win for Best Actor/Supporting Actor). Bastrerds is leaps and bounds better than any Tarantino film before, it's a very mature work. I think Europe ended up being a great inspiration for Tarantino and he made by far his best movie.

I loved the tension in the scenes, especially the opening. It reminded me of Pulp Fiction's opening scene. Even down to the villain chugging the host's drink, I thought that was especially a nice touch.

I didn't really think Pitt was all that special but he was fun to watch. And yeah man, Waltz was such a good villain in that movie. He might be one of my favourite movie villains now. Up there with Darth Vader, Shooter McGavin, and Anton Chigurh. EDIT: And Keyser Soze

Also Kill Bill, not fun? Beatrix Kiddo vs the Crazy 88's?!! Dude you must of been on some serious downers when you watched that if you didn't think that was good times.
