unless you expect 3D goggles to result in avatar balls in your face it is pretty unreal how visually stunning the imax 3D version is...
The Iraq war allusion/good v. evil themes weren't thought provoking or anything, but Cameron's movies are always epics with cheesy plots/dialogue, I was willing to look past those issues once I noticed how impressive it is visually.

Return of the Jedi meets Dances With Wolves. The former part made me smile and the second part made me a little sick in the mouth. Visuals worth the price of admission alone. Overall score: B.

Good call, oceanRain. I even leaned over and whispered "Return of the Jedi" to my wife during the movie last night!

To me, the 3D was not that impressive. It was the best 3D presentation I have seen to date, but that isn't an endorsement. Here is a really good article about how filming in 3D compromised the film's visual style: http://blogs.suntimes.com/scanners/2009/12/avatar_3d_headaches_look_at_th.html . So much of the money that was poured into the movie for every background detail, etc. is impossible to see in the 3D presentation because of blurriness and racking focus! Just give up on 3D and gimmickry and give me a provocative story and characters I care about.

Fair enough, I just prefer to think that this is a step in the right direction, and that the technology will eventually develop so that stereoscopy will be possible with the deep image as well as for objects in the foreground.
I feel like you should try 3D again when alice in wonderland comes out. The trailer in imax 3D looked cool as shit... |

despite my defense of how visually impressive the movie was, here is one of many problems with the plot:
