Prior to this year, I was oblivious to any Finnish music, though most of my favorite acts are from the Nordic countries. But once I discovered the infectious post punk of Big Wave Riders, that opened a treasure chest full of aural pleasures. Big Wave Riders are signed to a label of Italian name, Soliti(“the usual”) run by a musician/producer/radio host, Nick Triani, transplanted from London. In just little over a year, Triani has managed to build up an impressive catalogue from the sublime dream pop of Delay Trees, low-fi fuzz of Black Twig, and timeless indie pop of Cats On Fire. And outside of Soliti, there are plenty of noteworthy music to be still heard.
Overcome by my love for music, I flew from Portland, OR all the way to Helsinki, Finland to meet the people behind the fabulous music on Soliti. On a rainy Monday in late October, I met up with the very busy “head chef” of Soliti (Triani) along with Teppo and Petri of Big Wave Riders, and Rami Vierula of Delay Trees at the famed Corona Bar. Watch the video below to get an insight on the Finnish music scene.
