On a double-bill supporting Eric Bachmann, Richard Buckner performed a stunning hour-long set at the intimate Schuba's club in Chicago on September 14. With accompaniment by recently enlisted sideman Doug Gillard (ex-Guided By Voices) providing melodic flourishes, the performance featured new tracks from Buckner's Meadow, released in September by Merge. The pair did an impressive job of transposing the full studio arrangements to the small club using the few instruments at hand and some novel electronic manipulation. The new material shines when heard in this stripped-down format. That's particularly true for "Town," where Gillard's guitar phrases seem to complete Buckner's questioning lines in the chorus.
