Part 2: 'We're sort of in the best place we can be'

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2

[Part 2 of 2]

Here is the second part of the interview with Pretty Girls Make Graves ...

[more:]

Prefix Magazine:
It probably has something to do with the label switch, but this record has been a giant leap forward for you guys in terms of attention. Has that altered your view of the band?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
DF: I guess it's really exciting. This show sold out a couple of days ago, and hearing that's really exciting, and that kind of stuff's awesome. I'm not gonna lie. I mean, I'm like a little kid. But we've just been working so hard and touring so much that ... I dunno. I realize that it's a fluke that could just disappear.

PM:
Is there anything going on in Seattle now that's sort of under the radar?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
DF: Yeah, there's a ton, a lot that's not exactly under the radar. I'm kind of biased 'cause I have a record label, Cold Crush Records. We do Black Horse, a lot of good stuff ...
[At this point Drummer Nick Dewitt has wrapped up the sound check and joins in.]

PM:
Hey, we were just talking about the history of you guys and bands out of Seattle. Anything under the radar that you really like out there?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
ND: I really like Cobra High. I don't really have a lot of time to see new bands, I get home and I'm really trying to ... slow down a little bit. So other than that I couldn't really tell you. There are a lot of bands in Seattle that I don't like but I don't need to talk about that ... [Laughs.]

PM:
One thing I'm curious about is the name Pretty Girls Make Graves. Are you guys big Smiths fans?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
DF: It's not really ... one day try and name a band ... it's a very difficult thing ...

PM:
Let's talk about your van getting stolen recently. You guys lost all your amps?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
ND: All our heads were in there. The rolling keyboard amp ...

DF: All my outport gear, some expensive, irreplaceable, one-of-a-kind heads ... Rick called me, we were supposed to have band practice he called and was like, "Your van got towed!" And it just got worse and worse and worse ... I was just in denial for about three days. I had to make a lot of phone calls; none of the tow companies had it. But I think a week later I got a phone call and they had found the van in this section of Seattle called South Park. And they took everything. They took demo CDs of every band we've ever played with, tapes, magazines, everything that could be taken, except the seats.

PM:
And just ditched the van?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
ND: They took the Aerial, the antenna, filled the trailer up with construction garbage ... Kind of a last Fuck You.

PM:
Yeah that sounds like effort. Sucks.

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
ND: Yeah.

PM:
Something I'm interested in is how independent bands feel about file sharing. Do you feel like it's helped or hindered you at all?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
DF: I download songs, and if I like it, I buy records. I like to own records. I think downloading's awesome, and there are a lot of records with one good song. If you can download that song and save yourself money ...

PM:
You don't think it's affected you? Do you think it's helped?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
DF: Oh yeah, we get so many e-mails from kids, saying, "I heard that mp3, and that's how I heard of you ... "

ND: I think it really only hurts bands like Metallica that charge $21.99. There's records that are gonna lose a couple hundred sales, but ... I don't really want to hear what they have to say.

PM:
What are you guys doing after Europe?

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Part 2:
DF: After Europe we're going on a States tour, we're playing Coachella, and then we're gonna start working on the new record, be home for a little while maybe.
