The 5th installment of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival (BEMF) is just a few days away. It will be taking place on November 9 and 10 in various venues throughout the Williamsburg area in Brooklyn. And as the time counts down, more and more surprises are being revealed.
BEMF has been building a budding scene the last couple of years. Every year the folks at MeanRed Productions have pushed harder. They’ve brought over acts that have torn the house down and expanded the event hosting it in more venues. This year, musical artists such as Drop The Lime, Gold Panda, Braille, Shlohmo, Body Language, Pearson Sound, Brenmar, and Photek will be making appearances. And recently, a handful of artists have been announced joining the already 40+ line-up making the event even more exciting than it already is. Every year, the festival has gotten much bigger and much more beloved. The community has gotten stronger which makes them even more fun to attend.
Here are just some of the artists that you shouldn't miss out on:
NEW ADDITIONS TO THE LINE-UP
The duo compromises of Morgan Geist from New Jersey and Darshan Jesrani is from upstate New York. Since the 90s the two have collaborated and brought out the most banging organic tracks blending old school rnb and disco with modern electronics. Listen to their stunning track "Miura."
Drew Lustman from New York has been concocting some magic with his hands for quite a bit. Everything from dubstep to jungle and soul, FaltyDL has been pumping out tracks that'll get your heart pumping in no time. If you don't think so, listen to their new track "Straight & Arrow" from their new album Hardcourage which will be out next year.
Michael David Quattlebaum Jr. aka Mykkie Blanco will be bringing some of that hard hip-hop into the crowd along with the bombastic beats that follow his lyrical espionage on stage. The New York rapper crosses boundaries with his cross-dressing and genre bending which has directed the spotlight towards his theatrical live show. Watch the new video for his track "Wavvy" which was produced by Brenmar.
Lauren Flax. She's a member of CREEP and is the tour DJ for Fischerspooner. She's a producer, songwriter, musician and a DJ. She co-wrote the hit single "You've Changed" which features Sia and then was featured in Sia's album We Are Born. So to say that Lauren Flax is a new artist is a highly inaccurate statement. You've already heard her handywork everywhere and including at your favorite Forever 21 store.
The Brooklyn DJ has been catching on fire the last few years with remixes of the likes of Danny Brown, Kidz In The Hall and Donnis. He's mashed up Drake and has had mixtapes receive wide critical acclaim. On top of that, he also runs Fools Gold, one of today's hottest trend setting record labels (which he happened to have founded with A-Trak). So, in the end Nick Catchdubs is a man who just likes to party - which you'll find yourself doing so along with him. Listen to "Pop That" (Party Break) below to get a sample of his work.
Vito And Druzzi (from The Rapture)
If you don't know who Vito and Druzzi are, you've been living under a rock. The two are members of The Rapture which have been involved with the New York electronic and dance scene for well over a decade. They've won accolades ever since they've hit it big time an still stuck with the underground music that they've come from. The two will be making a special appearance doing a very special DJ set for the event.
The New York by the way of Chicago DJ/producer makes some of the sexiest tracks and remixes out there. You'll be hard pressed to not find yourself long to roll up on that person next to you and give it a go on the dancefloor together. Listen to his Justin Timberlake featuring Beyonce remix of "End of Time."
Derwin R. Powers aka Gold Panda the UK blip maker has been making rooms hot for a little while now. Gleaming with a mixture of instrumentals and hip hop beats, Gold Panda's work has received a slew of accolades from the likes of Pitchfork and NME. Listen to one of his early works "Quitters Raga."
Drop The Lime
Originally from the UK and now in New York, Luca Venezia has been around long enough to get the respect from the likes of Annie Mac and Diplo. Mixing all sorts of genres into his dance music creation, he's been able to move bodies effortlessly. Listen to "Hot As Hell" which puts together Rockabilly and dance.
Critically acclaimed producer and founder of Frite Nite, Salva will perform on Saturday night at Public Assembly. He's toured and performed on the biggest stages such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Detroit Electronic Music Festival and SXSW. To top it all off, he produced one of this year's biggest remixes. Listen to his remix of Kanye West's "Mercy."
In addition to the to the live musical performances, MeanRed are spicing things up with visual artistic flavor with installments curated by Paul Amitai. Amitai will be presenting the following artists: Nuit Blanche New York, CHiKA, Fever Creative, Jakob Dwight, Angie Eng. The two days will be blending some of the best in music and art.
