NYC Free Summer Shows: Your guide to wallet-friendly shows this summer (2007)

Summer and music go together like hot dogs and ketchup, ice cream and sprinkles, lemonade and vodka. But this summer, the music-festival trend has gone a bit far. Open any music magazine and you'll find multiple-page spreads on the hottest, hippest, and wildest music festivals of the season. There's Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, Lollapalooza, Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, Ozzfest, Pitchfork, Rock the Bells, Vans Warped Tour, and Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival. And that's just within the United States.

Prefix is all for the summer-music love, but we're not into ticket passes that often run upwards of a hundred bucks. Add to that travel expenses, hotel/camping costs, and the always-expensive festival beer, and there goes that air conditioner you've been dying to buy. So we bring you the fourth edition of our annual free-show listing: Because we know that you know better than shelling out your hard-earned cash to see the likes of Spoon, Erase Errata and DeVotchKa when you could see them for free. There's a show going on just about every day this summer, which means that you'll be getting a lot more music than a three-day pass to fill-in-the-blank festival could ever deliver. And don't forget to check in every week -- we'll be updating the listing as more shows are announced.d
